September 2017 Visiting Teaching Handout

The visiting teaching message for the month of September is titled Of One Heart. The message is about Zion and how that means we are unified and work together (it calls to mind the lyrics of As Sisters in Zion, actually).

I loved Elder Ballard’s quote about being one:

“At the heart of the English word atonement is the word one. If all mankind understood this, there would never be anyone with whom we would not be concerned, regardless of age, race, gender, religion, or social or economic standing. We would strive to emulate the Savior and would never be unkind, indifferent, disrespectful, or insensitive to others.”

But I especially loved Sister Stephens’ words about how our own personal struggles allow us to feel empathy and compassion towards others in their struggles. I have found that to be true in my life, and I hope to continue to develop that uniting empathy and compassion for others.

That stood out to me so much that I decided to use just that little blurb for the printable this month. I feel like I need that reminder to be compassionate because sometimes I am too busy in my own life to pay attention to those who are struggling. It’s too easy for me to become a hermit of sorts and just worry about my own family. So when I saw on our Relief Society Facebook page that someone needed dinners this week, my first reaction was to feel that I didn’t have any time for that. But then I remembered this lesson and I found my compassion and signed up for a day to bring the meal.

These kinds of reminders are good for me.

I recommend sending the file to a photo center such as Walmart or Costco if you don’t have a good photo printer at home. I print mine on this Canon printer which does an excellent job. I print it straight onto 5×7 photo paper so it is ready to go into a frame for my sisters.
